Senior Legal Counsel (Director) Job Specification
Position Summary
This broad and varied role will provide legal support to Janssen’s commercial operations in the UK & Ireland (comprising our Haematology, Oncology, Immunology, Cardiology (PAH), Neuroscience and Vaccines therapeutic areas (TAs)). The role will report into the Legal Director and will be based at the Janssen UK offices in High Wycombe. The Senior Legal Counsel will be a key member of a team comprising of the Legal Director, a further Senior Legal Counsel, a (junior) Legal Counsel and an Executive Assistant.
Major Duties & Responsibilities
The Senior Legal Counsel will take a lead lawyer support role for two of Janssen’s TAs, as well as providing general legal advice and drafting contracts in support of various commercial activities across all Janssen’s TAs, including solutions and services initiatives.
The Senior Legal Counsel will support the Legal Director in on a number of issues relating to the external environment, including advising on Brexit-related matters, reviewing and responding to consultations, issues arising from the NHSE Commercial Framework and participating in ABPI working groups.
The Senior Legal Counsel will provide primary legal support to the Health Economics and Market Access team, negotiating and drafting contracts with NHSE and regional bodies. The Senior Legal Counsel will also review and provide strategic advice in relation to novel pricing schemes (such as outcomes-based arrangements) and advise on issues such as competition law, confidentiality and net pricing, and multi-indication pricing.
The Senior Legal Counsel will take the lead in providing support to commercial activities in Ireland, building close relationships with the Irish management team, support of general market access activities and external environment discussions (e.g., in relation to HSE, IPHA). The Senior Legal Counsel will also oversee general support by the legal team of CVT activities in Ireland.
The Senior Legal Counsel will provide primary legal support in relation to product complaints, litigation and PMCPA cases, working closely with colleagues in the UK and EMEA.
Additionally, the Senior Legal Counsel will actively participate in identifying best practices and support initiatives and activities aimed at optimizing Janssen’s good corporate governance.
The Senior Legal Counsel will work closely with the Legal Director, Senior Legal Counsel, Legal Counsel and/or external legal counsel, as well as building relationships with other supporting compliance functions such as data privacy, healthcare compliance, and pharmacovigilance to ensure appropriate legal input is given in support of business activities.
The Senior Legal Counsel will mentor and support the development of more junior team members, with potential to directly line manage the Legal Counsel. The Senior Legal Counsel will also collaborate closely with other UK & Ireland law department members and colleagues in the Janssen EMEA legal team to share best practices.
Desired Skills and Experience
Required Qualifications
– Required Minimum Education: degree (in any discipline) and qualified as a solicitor in England & Wales
– Required Years of Related Experience: Strong proven PQE track record
– Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Significant commercial legal work experience at a law firm and/or equivalent in-house experience, ideally in the healthcare sector.

– Knowledge of UK and other bribery/anti-corruption legislation and industry codes
– Strong team working skills – relationship management, interpersonal, communication (both written and spoken), negotiation and organizational skills.

– Capable of drafting contract terms and conditions in English, attention to detail, reviewing contracts for conformity to policies and identifying and assessing risks.

– Able to set an example and ensure high ethical, legal and compliance standards and comfortable dealing with ambiguity.
– Good self-awareness, constructive mindset, eager to seek and receive feed-back.
