NBCUniversal News Group encompasses four premium brands that are driving the national news agenda and driving billions of visits a year across NBC News, CNBC, MSNBC and TODAY. Search is a significant traffic source in a complex, dynamic, competitive environment. We are seeking a leader to unify our strategy and establish best in class tactics in our pursuit of being #1 in reach and engagement with consumers.
The Director will lead NBCU News Group’s strategy, knowledge base, technology, tools and innovation across the portfolio, working with dedicated leads for NBC News, CNBC, MSNBC, TODAY, as well as our growing Commerce business. A thought leader and expert practitioner, they will flex from technical through editorial, acting as the key interface for our product and technology teams and newsroom leaders.
Success in the role will advance reach, the competitive share of voice, engagement and revenue across our editorial and commerce content. The role will have high impact and visibility across News Group digital leadership.
Responsibilities:
Develop our organizational strategy for search tactics and technology
Lead our organization knowledge of Google, algorithm changes, marketplace practices, and how we need to adapt to stay ahead of the field
Connect with dedicated leads for each NBC News Group brand who will execute day to day SEO support with their respective newsrooms
Act as a leader and single point of contact for our News Group product and technology team in order to implement best practices uniformly across the group
Develop high-level recommendations for content planning and evergreen strategies, thinking well ahead of news cycles so we are positioned to win
Innovate our tools and workflows to increase share of voice
Build an SEO marketing tech stack to automate and circulate rank tracking, crawl reports, and competitive research
Partner with engineers, product managers and 3rd party vendors on technical audits
Develop SEO best practices trainings for the digital organization
Lead specific cross-functional projects across product & tech, editors and SEO brand leads to innovate, test and improve processes and feedback loops
Act as a leader when it matters, during our biggest editorial tentpole events, exclusives, and moments that we should own
Qualifications/Requirements
Five or more years of search engine optimization experience
Deep expertise in SEO across each Google interface (Eg AMP, Discover), product (Eg Google, YouTube), and content type (Eg articles, live blogs)
Demonstrated track record of success in digital media
Desired Characteristics
Expert with search-specific tools, including Google Search Console, Brightedge, SEMRush, and Botify
Five or more years of content strategy experience, with a strong emphasis on search distribution and discoverability
Editorial sensibility ranging from news to lifestyle and commerce
Experience in Adobe Analytics, Google Analytics, or a comparable web measurement toolset
Strong competitive knowledge and marketplace network in order to keep a steady stream of new ideas to News Group
Analytically geared with attention to detail
Proven ability to manage multiple projects, balancing daily deliverables and long-term strategic gains
Able to contribute at high levels strategically and operationally
Effortless collaborator and expert communicator who can work well within cross-functional teams
Quick study who can flex approach with comfort and ease
Strong point of view, ok saying “no” when priorities don’t align
